I noticed on an online friend’s blog that a heartwarming effort has raised an issue that has me sort of surprised.

The summary is basically that this person went to a lot of effort to aid a homeless man adopt a dog who was also homeless, and the pair moved from NYC down to Florida.  The homeless man, Benedict, seemed to truly care for the dog and would accept no aid for himself and only aid for Kaos, the dog. Benedict’s lifestyle was of his own choice. Kaos, the dog, was left at a shelter a short time ago and the shelter contacted this person as the official owner of Kaos. There then ensued a huge effort to rescue Kaos from the shelter in which she had been placed before she would be euthanized, find a foster home and get her veterinary care. There was a lot of coordination involved and many people stepped up to offer generous aid and support.

Amongst the comments once this had been resolved and Kaos was safely in foster care, was a person identified as “Chris” who raised the opinion that it was wasted effort. Not because he didn’t like dogs or animals in general – but because there is so much need for humanity that it seems a loss to waste charitable effort on an animal that could have been spent on a human.

I invite you to read the comments and this person’s reasoning yourself, so that I don’t color it all with bias. I think it is an interesting point to consider. I personally do not agree with this person and actually lean towards agreeing with the opinions posed by nycgadgetgirl, who owns the blog.

I participate in many charitable causes, giving donations and volunteering my time – some of those causes are for animals or environment and some of those causes are for people. I see none of it as a waste and I think it all helps touch not just one life, be it human or animal, but many lives. Any kindness, be it large or small, is still a kindness and hopefully will be paid forward. Just my 2 cents.
