I did some brief researching to find the answer…because I’m learning.
railroading your cross stitches
However, although the author of this blog gave a clear definition…I think I might need a visual lesson on how to do this stitch by stitch. I like the idea of saving floss and having neater stitches.

This gives a pictoral explanation, but for some reason it looks more complicated there than it actually is - but it might help you visualize it better. Basically what you do is use the needle to split the two strands as you’re going back into the fabric so that they lay flat next to each other rather than lay twisted.
